White Smoke Evokes TV Nostalgia
White smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel's chimney this afternoon, signaling to the world that a new Catholic pope had been chosen: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany.
While all this was being announced, I couldn't help but think of John Ratzenberger, the loveable mailman Cliff Clavin of the '80s sitcom Cheers. Ratzinger. Ratzenberger. Besides being similarly named, Ratzenberger resembles a younger version of the pope, and they're both Aries men. So uncanny.
Since Cheers ended its run in 1993, Ratz has been seemingly out of sight, out of mind. He's one of the least celebrated cast members, with no annoying TV ads (Kirstie Alley), long-running spinoff series (Kelsey Grammar) or terrible made-for-TV movies (Rhea Perlman).
Upon doing a little research on IMDB.com, I discovered that Ratz has in fact been working consistently these past years - just not in front of the camera. To learn more, here's some interesting facts about America's favorite TV mailman:
-He was born in Bridgeport, CT, and was friends with Meg Ryan's mother. Personal connection: Ratz went to school with my 2nd cousin Gerry. Two degrees!
-He is the only person to have voiced characters in all seven of Pixar's feature films, including the yet-to-be-released Cars.
-He is the only cast member of Cheers who actually lived in Boston.
Go ahead now...drink a beer and toast the new pope!

every time I see that photo of him with his hands up it just looks like he is in his head going "yeah that's right I’m the PO-PA!" even though he is not Italian I can't stop thinking about that state sketch – “the PO-PA is coming”
