My New Television Addiction
In the same vein as "Driven," "Behind The Music" and their many E! television rip-offs, VH1 has once again been able to take a boring, dated concept, and through brilliant execution, make it captivating. Case in point: Bands Reunited.
Here's the breakdown:
Phase 1: Host Aamer Haleem - in spontaneous, Publisher's-Clearinghouse-style - visits each band member individually and asks him or her to reunite with their old band. If said member agrees, s/he autographs an old record as a token of their commmitment.
Phase 2: After all band members have been pursued, the "yes" members reunite to sort out their old issues and rehearse. This is the most heart-wrenching moment of the show.
Phase 3: The band takes stage to perform their most defining hit, while the cameras pan to each member for a split screen "then and now" shot. Wow, people sure do age!
I watched three episodes this weekend - Berlin, Romeo Void and Klymaxx - and was completely mesmerized, at times even touched, by all the colors of emotions that resurfaced after being buried for so long. While Berlin wins on tenderness, Klymaxx definitely takes home the cake on nasty. Episodes are airing every night this week at 10 p.m. Check it out!
